The Muslim’s vs Desi’s Yo
Salam, the reason why i decided to talk about the Muslim’s vs Desi’s yo was because i feel like alot of us sometimes put our desiness before islam, although i am born and raised in america specifically by the hood in brooklyn, but i love eating some slammin basmati rice with tandoori chicken, bihari kebab, biryani and sometimes when it comes to the desi culture we derive some thing’s from it that are acceptable to islam and some we don’t accept, One thing i like about the desi culture is the food, although it can be oily at some times, depending on how much of the oil you can actually slurp, but i have to say i like the urdu language, except for the curses. I love hearing urdu khutbah’s from SOME invidual’s, but of course i would enjoy shaykh hamza yusuf or Imam siraj wihaj more. The reason is because i speak english fluently and my urdu sounds mad unprofessional.
So back to the desi vs islam thing, i don’t like how in the desi culture, they take some thing’s from islam and the rest they leave, alot of kid’s i’ve analyzed are raised with basic islamic principles they learn early, and the rest is left in the dust, the fitrah of an islamic family start’s early, we have to keep it real basically is what im saying….i mean one second we have naat’s, the next second adhan sami, all these cat’s. Basically it’s one or the other, and you probably won’t agree with me, but it’s true, we make islam our second thing, we think to ourselves “oh we are born muslim so it’s all good”, i’m going to be honest i did’nt really start pursuring knowledge till last year alhumduillah, after the fluctuating iman, i finally realized i was muslim, and i had alot of knowledge to attain, and of course we are all student’s of knowledge, so step ya game up, alot of us are Muslim’s by name, not real belief’s, how can you really believe if you don’t know!
Another thing i hate about desi culture, is the hindu’s that mess up our muslim’s, we don’t think it’s a big deal, but this bollywood disaster, dancing on green grass, song’s that repeat the same chorus 100 times in the same song, the thought’s and images it puts in our head while we are praying, this is all real brother’s and sister’s, im speaking from experience, another thing is the party scene, it’s killing our Muslim youth, hindu’s are making them feel comfortable because of culture similarities, i’ve seen it with close friend’s, you can relate also, don’t front.
So let’s chill out with our version of islam, islam never changed since it’s inception, our beloved Prophet Muhammd (s) is still perserved like jewels, and we have to tell ourselves that we are the one’s who are changing, now the challenge is looking at culture and being careful about what we take from it, for example the phrase “Chill Yo Islam Yo” is part of my culture, dosen’t mean it’s impermissible, though i should confirm it with Mufti Abdul Rehman Ibn Yusuf, got him on the fatwa speed dial, so what im saying is lets put things in perspective, let’s look at thing’s from an Islamic Perspective, now some thing’s which are acceptable to me, might not be to you, but i guess at the end of the day, result’s are clear, my point is there islam is a way of life, the Prophet Muhammad came from the Arab’s they had their own culture, so let’s keep the balance, wherever we are Allah put us there for a purpose, let’s take the good and leave the bad…and remember “Chill Yo Islam Yo”
