The Importance of Making Suhoor
Suhoor, Sehri, Sahari, Sahur…don’t get scared it’s all the same thing.
I just wrote it in different languages, you do know what Suhoor is right?
Suhoor is a small meal traditionally eaten before dawn during Ramadan by Muslims; the final meal before the day’s fast begins.
Over the years, I’ve been a slacker on Suhoor. I usually wake up like 5 minutes before time ends, drink a glass of water, brush my teeth, pray and go back to sleep.
But I noticed by trying to be superman I only hurt my productivity throughout the day especially with college and work. Sometimes we feel our fasts are difficult and we find ourselves lacking the mental and physical energy to concentrate, it’s not surprising.
If you don’t make your suhoor properly then your body will obviously react, it’s not used to this sudden change in lifestyle. So don’t leave out Suhoor!
I didn’t know their were many hadith on it until recently, now that I’m aware of this, insh’Allah this Ramadan will be different. I mean that in a good way. My suhoor won’t just be water anymore, it will be more of a balanced meal. I just prayed Fajr and now I’m writing this blog post, today was my first Suhoor and I had:
» A chicken leg (my mom put alot of masala on it, =).. with one slice of bread)
» 3 glasses of Gatorade, it has alot of Carbohydrates and Electrolytes.
I don’t know what electrolytes are but it sounds healthy, haha.
So where are the proofs for Suhoor? Check out some hadith below
The Prophet (Pbuh) himself used to have suhoor. At times, some of his companions joined him for his suhoor meal. Zaid ibn Thabit, a young companion of the Prophet (peace be upon him) reports: “We had suhoor with the Prophet (S) before he stood up to pray.” Anas who transmitted this report asked Zaid: “How much time was there between the call to prayer and your suhoor?” He answered: “About 50 verses of the Quran.”
Anas (RA) quotes the Prophet (Pbuh) as saying: “ Make sure to have your suhoor meal, for suhoor is blessed.”
Another Hadith related by Muslim on the authority of Amr ibn Al-Aas quotes the Prophet (peace be upon him) as saying: “ The difference between our fasting and that of the people of earlier revelations is the suhoor meal.”
There you have it, make sure you do your Suhoor tomorrow insh’Allah.
