Michael Phelps exercise

Salam,

So how does a guy like Micheal Phelps who consumes 12,000 calories a day swim 50 miles a week? let’s find out. With all the news buzz on Michael Phelps exercise and his extraordinary swimming skills, I figured let me analyze his lifestyle a little bit and how we can benefit from it. This all leads to applied fitness in Islam and how we should all step up our game and get in shape, otherwise we are going to melt in Ramadan and we won’t be able to stand up in Tarawih Prayer.

I think it’s sad that alot of Non Muslims feel we can’t learn from them. Whether it be in education, sports, contributing to a better society and raising our standards, there is much we can learn, and much calories we can burn like the Micheal Phelps exercise.

All of the best of course which the Non Muslims bring fourth our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace and salutations be upon him) had, his life manifested all of the best qualities a human being can have. So whatever he did, he did it for a bigger wisdom. Of course alot of Muslims haven’t studied the seerah nor we do have sufficient knowledge of the beloved sunnah, including myself and as a result people are uneducated about what Islam teaches.

So how does Michael Phelps relate to Muslims? You have ten seconds, count the dots……….Well he’s a professional swimmer, an olympic gold medalist who has more medals than Desi’s have Masalas. When I say gold medalist, I’m talking about top notch athlete. His swimming abilities are exceptional and guess what? Swimming is Sunnah!

Yup it’s recommended highly from our beloved Prophet Muhammad (S),  an a official hadith narrated from Hazrat Ibn Umar (R.A) in which our beloved Prophet said  ” Teach your children swimming, archery and horse riding”.

Let’s look at the benefits of swimming (information from lifescript.com)

1)  It’s a Sunnah , first and foremost. It improves cardiovascular conditioning.

2)  It is a form of meditation which calms the nerves.

3)  It improves muscle strength, endurance, posture and flexibility all at the same time.

4) It improves body’s use of oxygen. Making blood flow to the lungs and heart more efficient.

5) A swimmer can burn as many calories in an hour, as a runner who runs six miles in one hour.

Wow, that’s impressive. So get moving, if you don’t know how to swim. Wait, I shouldn’t be talking I don’t either, well I have asthma so I can’t hold my breath. Inshallah my lungs can handle it one day.

So if athletes can swim at this level, let’s complete the minimum and at least learn it since our beloved Prophet told us. Start swimming with the sharks, na just playin, swim in clean water so your always in a state of wudu =P.

I felt I needed to talk about this, drawing parallels from world events to Islam is always a great thing to do.

Alright I’m out peoples. Wasalaam.
