I don’t go on Dates…I eat them.

Salam,
What do you really know about dates or sunnah secrets? The other day I was having a discussion with a brother on whether or not wearing a turban is better than wearing a hat. I was of the opinion that wearing a turban is better, he mentioned that the hat and turban serve the same purpose. Now logically that makes perfect sense, I am not going to refute that in terms of shariah guidelines. But one thing I’m always comfortable with is that every sunnah from our beloved Prophet Muhammad (s) had hikma (wisdom) behind it.

Now obviously our beloved Prophet (s) came from the desert lands and the people at that time wore turbans before he was even there. What’s interesting is that in America if you wear a turban, your automatically on someones radar, and I really believe that bringing all these sunnah’s back like wearing a turban, a tobe, using the blessed Miswak, and oh yea eating date’s can really be a means to give dawah.

Yes Muslims are strange people, but strange stands out. So back to the date’s, i wanted to just bring this up because many people have the misconception that some sunnah’s don’t really have meaning behind it but we know through research that everything our beloved Prophet (s) told us to do has a positive effect on our mind, body, and soul.

One thing that came up in my conversation was date’s. The brother said eating date’s are sunnah but they don’t really have much significance. I automatically got a bit heated but I did my research and this is what I found.

Dates were the food that Allah provided for Mary after she gave birth to Prophet Isa (peace be upon him) under the palm tree and was experiencing pain, Allah inspired Prophet Isa to tell Mary under the tree since he was a blessed infant to “ Shake the trunk of the palm tree, and it will drop ripe dates on you, so eat, drink, and comfort your eyes (with what Allah gave you) Quran 19:25

From Hadith:

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: the prophet (PBUH) said: “Indeed in dates there is a cure”. Reported by Muslim (14/3) and Ahmad (6/152)

The Prophet (PBUH) said: “ Whoever finds dates should break his fast with them and the one who does not should break his fast with water because it is pure”

It was reported by Abu Naaim, Abu Daoud, Al Hakem, Al Imam Al Tirmithi and mentioned in The book of Al Imam Al Thahabi The Prophetic Medicine” that the Prophet (PBUH) said: “ The one who eats 7 dates in the morning will be protected that day from poison and envy”

The Prophet (PBUH) said: “Break your fast by eating dates as it is purifying.” (Narrated by Ahmad)

In addition Dates have many vitamins and minerals, Bedouin Arabs who eat them highly and they have have far less heart disease and lower rates of cancer.

Dates are reported to be useful in the treatment of respiratory disorders, heart conditions, cancer (due to its high magnesium and calcium content), anemia, allergies, and constipation.

See that? Look at how many benefits one of the Sunnah’s have. Now Inshallah go research some more and you will realize how your life can really change by implementing the sunnah slowly but surely.
