President Obama Backs Mosque Near Ground Zero

Mash’allah! President Barack Obama on Friday endorsed allowing a mosque near ground zero, saying the country’s founding principles demanded no less. Obama made the comments at an annual White House dinner celebrating Ramadan.

“Let me be clear, as a citizen and President, I believe Muslims have the right to practice their religion as everyone else in this country. That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan with local laws and orders. This is America and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable. The principle that people of all faiths are welcomed in this country and that they will not be treated differently by their government is essential to who we are.” – President Barack Obama

Sorry Pamella Geller, it is what it is!

Just saw this in an edit on UK news; the general reaction is 'how dare he back the Muslims?' But alhamdulillah.

I think its not a right decision to make a Islamic Center @ Ground Zero.. It will fire the tension against Muslims..

For all the Muslims who are worried about the well being of NY Muslims, I suggest you read the seera of the Prophet (S). Imagine all the hardships he and the Sahaba (R) had to go through to simply get the message of Allah across. This masjid is (by the will of Allah) perhaps the biggest icon of religious freedom in the US and the Muslims of NY who are lucky enough to go there are going to gain immense reward (inshaAllah) such that all the hate they may encounter could never amount to their reward. Also, this is the same path many cultural groups before us had to go through (i.e Blacks, Jews, Japanese, Irish.. etc). InshaAllah, We're making progress and in the end it's Allah we have to answer to, not bigots.

    Dear Saad,

I've recently stumbled upon your blog by googling "Islamic pick up lines" because I wanted to read the list. I used to think they were hilarious, but I read your article and it changed the way I perceived them.

I am from one of the gulf countries and I went to a private school from KG til Year 12. Both my parents are Muslim and have raised me as such, but…. I am not against private schools, I would never have been this eloquent and fluent in English had I been sent to a public school (IB, A-levels, French, and extensive English are only offered in private schools). Our religion classes were weak and only offered 3 times a month. The overall culture of my school was "Western is cool, let's all go out on dates and go clubbing and drinking". I never did such things but there were others who did.

We weren't encouraged to speak of religion, and to be honest, the few kids who were religious were ostracized. I also used to think that religious people were "backwards" and "mentally impaired". I would wonder, "Why do they like to complicate things and make everything haraam or makrooh?"

I was never taught the full seera or tafseer of the surahs. I can't even read Quran with telawah (sorry if my translations are a bit off, I'm used to speaking about religion in Arabic). I used to go to an extremely pro-Sunni anti-Shi'a organization when I was about 5 years old (Question: why do Americans say Shiite? Where did the T come from?). Man that was one gigantic force of hate. They actually told us that it is HARAM to be friends with Christians and Jews! Can you believe that?! It's HARAM to be FRIENDS with ahl al-kitab! I told my mother about this and she pulled me out of that crazy place in a heartbeat.

I joined sane and proper religious classes and clubs, and made some wonderful friends after I graduated high school.

I realize that this might not really have a point but I guess what I'm trying to say is thank you. Thank you for creating this blog. Thank you for doing this. It really means a lot to me. I know that I'm a long way from becoming as religious and spiritual as some of the brothers and sisters here, but your blog is helping me get on the right track. This is one of the few blogs that doesn't give a misconstrued portrayal of Islam.

My question regarding this article is:

How come Saudi Arabia doesn't allow churches and other religious temples to be constructed? Italy, home of the Vatican, has mosques there. I'm not saying that the religious temples should be built alongside the ka'aba, but seeing as how Muslims say that they have a right to practice their religion in other countries, shouldn't Saudi Arabia do the same to other religions? I would like to hear everyone's thoughts about this.

    Sincerely,

    Shaikha

The quote starts: "Let me be clear." not "Let me clear."

When you quote, get it right!

Yep. I figured he was only going to ralley, ralley suck. Never underestimate a Baby Boomer, I guess. Probably only 7 or 8 more presidential terms left from that generation and then we can start our rise from the ashes.
