Iced out Beliefs….

Salam,

Have you ever thought about buying a chain with an Allah pendant? When I’m working in the mall, I see people coming in wearing chains so heavy it seems as if they can’t keep their head up, they sort of look like the hunchback of notre dame.

From the bling bling to the bling bloaw, everyone is trying to be the center of attention. White gold, platinum, diamonds, you name it.

Anyways that’s not what I wanted to talk about, I actually wanted to write about how people wear thousand dollar chains with Prophet Jesus on it ( peace and blessings be upon him). Have you ever seen them? I’m sure you have seen a bunch of rappers wear them and it almost seems like a fashion statement.

What strikes me is that these people wear these chains that have a Prophet of God Almighty, but their lifestyle totally contradicts the teachings of God. I mean why wear it? just take it off.

See their are people who straight up say, ” hey I’m not practicing the deen right now” and they acknowledge their shortcomings. On the other hand, you got people who put on a front and decorate their beliefs like a carvel cake. Alot of the non Muslims I come across, they actually stop and listen if you give them dawah in a professional way, of course your character impacts your surrounding the most.

What about Muslims who rock pendants that say Allah in Arabic, take for example DJ Khaled, one of the most popular Dj’s in hip hop right now. His Allah pendant costs over 60,000 thousand dollars. The most popular jeweler in New York, whose name is Jacob the Jeweler, who is a jew himself. Haha that’s a little funny. Anyways he sells to the richest rappers and celebrities, here is one chain he has on his website, An 18K Rose Gold 3.32ct Pave Diamond “Allah” Pendant
(Item #90712675) The picture is shown on the top right of the post.

So why rock it? I guess its just a trend. To alot of people it may be disrespect and hypocrisy, but others look at it as ” hey at least they have some remembrance of faith, whether it be in the heart or on the neck. Well maybe they are right, I mean who is anyone to really judge. In the end it seems like the focus may be on materialism and trying to shine like the sun, but I would really want to talk to people like Dj Khaled and ask them what their lifestyle means to them as a Muslim.

Alot of times, I also believe that everyone wants to represent something and while their is no problem with reppin your beliefs, the question is as a Muslim, can you wear expensive gold chains that say Allah or for that matter can a man wear a diamond chain that says Allah in Arabic. We know that it is impermissible for a man to wear gold as it is. White gold I’m not sure about.

It’s all about keeping it real with yourself. Whatever you do, just remember Allah swt is watching you and your actions are based on intentions. As a Muslim you gotta stick within in your limits and remain modest, although their is nothing wrong with riches. In Brooklyn, you meet so many different people with different perspectives and upbringings. While alot of them may have a lifestyle that is not Islamic, alot of them haven’t gotten dawah in a pleasant manner. We should realize the problems of the Ummah and rather than going crazy about the small things, its always about the bigger picture.

The reason I wrote about this is because I wanted to just open the window to what we claim we are, and if our actions really embody the prophetic teachings of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (s). For those of us who wear hijabs and have beards, Even those who wear religious chains, we just have remember when a non Muslim sees that chain, hijab or beard they will recognize who we are and what we are ultimately contributing to the image of Islam.

Well that’s what I wanted to talk about since I observed it recently, Inshallah I will write another article soon. Sorry I’m real busy. May Allah swt keep us on the deen, protect us from dunya distractions and help us keep eman in our hearts as well as contribute to Islam and make us all rich..in the hearts and in wealth. So we can contribute to positive causes within our communities and especially Muslim communities. Ameen! peace out.

If I stated anything wrong it is from myself and if I said anything beneficial it is from Allah swt alone.

Good post, although you have to realize that most of these rappers that rock chains that symbolize religion aren’t doing because they are Muslim or Christian. They are simply doing it because they have so much money that it’s part of the hip hop rapper culture to buy something religous. I highly doubt any of them go to churches or mosques.

This is funny, I’ve never seen a Jewish rapper let alone a the Star of David all bling’d up.
    Haha.

    MR:

You must have forgotten about Remedy (who was a Wu-affiliate).

He was rocking a bilnged-out star of David (alaihi salaam) on his album cover.

I’ve seen people wearing chains and other arabic symbols – they may look good – but the thing we have to remember is that they would need to be removed before entering the bathroom, so unless you have someone with you to watch your things, its not very practical! lol I dont think many people realise this.

Man, Allah chains are so 90s! In those days brothers wore Allah Chains to the club. :(

But you are right people want to rep. Some Muslims like Islam and have positive feelings towards it, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are deening.

In those days it was a very strong fad. I remember brothers asking Imam Siraj numerous times about silver chains. He said silver is fine, but reminded them Gold is not.

But why do mean want to ornament themselves like women? Even with watches, I think you got to keep it simple and less jewlryish like a woman.

About Dj Khalid yeah im remember him on Cribs on Mtv, showing his chains and the one on top too.
Im not tryin to judge and all that but if hes gonna get into the music industry why not potray goodness, for the Muslim youth who do listen to music and non-muslims. So they can be like”wow, hes a good guy, hes clean and all that.hes muslim…”

    Bismillah,

Ive been reading this blog for quite some time now, it reminds me of Ummah Films and their videos because the topics are quite realistic. However, I personally wouldnt start with the rappers and their blinding silverware, not because it hurts my vision, but because they are not leading a nation like other , and hold a limited influence. Yes, hundreds of kids may listen to their music and want to dress like them, but in time, people grow up and grow out of that phase, may Allah protect us from our own weaknesses, Ameen.

Rather, I would start with the leaders. I just got back from Saudi and subhanAllah, I feel insulted that the very nation whose primary goal should be upholding the banner of Islam and being foremost in their good deeds, are the same people degrading the very essence of human life. How so? Well, for example, Saudi has thousands of foreign workers coming and going within the Kingdom every year. I know of someone, personally, who was lied to AND called in as an engineer, and instead, was hired as a waiter at some restaurant. He had no access to calling his family for months, and further, when he refused to cut his beard, these same people asked him to work as a janitor instead. The irony: this event took place within minutes from Masjid Al-Haram, aka, the Kabah.

Indeed, KSA does believe their race is superior because of the “Kingdom” and Islam teaches us that the most righteous amongst us is the one who races to please their Lord, Al-Mussawir.

“ The people (or nations) before you were destroyed due to the fact that when a noble person among them would steal, they let him go unpunished, but if a poor, weak and gullible person among them steals they will apply the Corpal punishment to him. By Allah! If Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with him); the daughter of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stole (the value where she will be subject to Corpal punishment) I shall cut her hand”

May Allah grant us pious leaders, and may He grant success to Filistine, Bosnia, Chechnya, Sudan, and every corner of the world where a Muslim is being stripped of their BASIC rights. Allhuma Ameen ya Rabul Alameen.

Hello, First off i would like to get something about DJ Khaled off my chest I belive he is a faurd and a fake and has no respect for muslims or the faith sure he wears the allah chain but in the vedio “We Taking Over” He sits and puts his head down in a prayer like position and in “I wont tell” and “Out here Gridin” he is shown holding acholic drinks.

But thats beside the point about the chains i wear a silver Allah chain it has no ice or fake diamonds and i belive i have a very good reason for wearin it i wear it to “show off” the muslim faith i mean you see all theses people wearin jesus peices and curcifix and its wear to see a allah chain so I say let all the brothers go buy allah chains and rep our faiths.

A final point will be about what one brother said about where u can wear it i belive u can wear it anywhere and yes that means 2 the bath room theres is nothing wtrong in my opinion and I will now share with you why. First point some people make if u are discarding of bodly fluid its haram to wear it i beg to differ u are not on wudu and thats it so if you can hold a quran when ur not on wudu u can wear the chain. Now about the bathroom itself we all know that times have changed since the prophets time for instance drugs there was none of that extacy or designer drugs but they have made them haram but now of the bathroom itself bathrooms today are much cleaner then they were many of the bathrooms today are cleaner than some of the houses some people wore during the prophets time so i say BROTHERS WEAR YOUR CHAINS AND WEAR THEM PROUD.

    Salam

Nice article! When my brother and cousins used to wear silver chains to the masjid the sheikh used to tell them that males are only allowed to wear a silver ring on their finger (enagagement/marriage ring). Also gold is not accepted for guys at all. And if someone is proud of their religon, they should show it in their actions and the way they deal with others. Also the bathroom is a dirty place where the Shayateen are. The religon teacher always used to tell us not to stay in the bathroom to chill and talk with our friends. Allah’s name cannot be said in the bathroom, so I dont think it’s allowed to go in with a necklace that says His name.

Man, I don’t understand how you can go to the bathroom with any kind of religious chain on.. I mean here you are, in the dang bathroom and There’s hanging a piece of Holiness around your neck.

    WTfrick?!?!

I get on my mom about wearing Ayat-Al-Kursi and Khana Kaba around her neck. Just not right… I tell her why don’t you go read Ayat-Al-Kursi instead of just rockin it..

And then I’m like wait Ma, do you even know what ayah number Ayat-Al-Kursi is and in which sura?
